Last Saturday, more than 120 students from across the state of Delaware connected with nearly 20 top colleges at TeenSHARP’s first Selective College Fair.
The fair—an initiative of TeenSHARP’s “Delaware Goes to College Academy” (DGCA) program—was designed to expose Delaware high schoolers to highly-selective colleges with generous financial aid that many students consider out of reach.
Students from more than 20 different high schools(including William Penn, Alexis I. duPont, Concord, Newark High and also from as far as Caesar Rodney High School in Kent County and Seaford Senior High School and Indian River High School in Sussex County, Delaware) attended the event.
As envisioned, the event helped close the awareness and access gaps that limit great college options for too many students— especially low-income and minority students. One rising junior from Freire Charter School shared:
“This college fair was very unexpected as it was all schools that I haven’t really heard of or know much about. Though small it was very informational. After going I thought that maybe I am better suited for a liberal arts school.”
You can check out highlights from the event here and listen to more student perspectives via WITN22Wilm’s video coverage of the event.
The fair is one of a series of unique supports now available to rising 11th or 12th grade Delaware students with a 3.0 and above through TeenSHARP’s DGCA program.
The program is generously supported by: The Delaware Department of Education, Longwood Foundation, Capital One, Arsht-Cannon Fund, Bank of America, Laffey McHugh, and Wilmington City Council.
DGCA is accepting additional applications on a rolling basis so please spread the word!
